How Do I Know if We Are Communicating Effectively?

September 01, 20251 min read

Effective communication is the foundation of healthy relationships. Couples often mistake frequent talking for effective communication, but true effectiveness is measured by outcomes rather than frequency.

Research on relationship communication highlights that effective communication is characterized by mutual understanding, validation, and problem-solving (Canary & Dindia, 1998). Partners who feel heard and respected report higher relationship satisfaction, regardless of whether full agreement is reached.

Gottman’s (1994) findings also suggest that the aftermath of conversations is key. Couples who leave discussions feeling more connected are communicating effectively, while those who leave feeling dismissed are not.

Practical Implications
Indicators of effective communication include:

  • A sense of being understood even when disagreements remain.

  • The ability to resolve conflicts without lingering resentment.

  • Emotional closeness following important conversations.

Effective communication is not about avoiding conflict but about achieving mutual understanding. Couples who measure communication by outcomes rather than word count are more likely to sustain healthy relationships.
